Lately, as our group becomes more well-known, I’ve noticed some of the things the survivors are saying, and it warms my heart.  Not one of the three founders of Lifting Hearts had a support group when we went through breast cancer, and that is a big reason why we started this group.  We understand how important support is!    I read this quote by Damian Marley, and realized that it’s the perfect description of what our group does:

“I find it very fascinating that one person or a group of people can get together as a choir and come up with a song that ends up inspiring people to create emotions, love and togetherness.”
What an apt description of a beautiful group of sisters – who together has created a “song” that has inspired so many.  Each individual in our group has specific talents and abilities that add to that score.  There is a reason each of us is part of a group that offers love, support, friendship, and understanding.  We’d love to have YOU join us.

From some of our members:
Lifting Hearts gave me hope when I felt alone in the world even though so many people were around.
Lifting Hearts has been a huge blessing in my life, and these women have totally lifted my spirit with hope and peace.”
“You’re not alone–We are here for you!!! Hugs!!!”
“Welcome to our elite club. You now have so many friends who already love you and have empathy for you, even though you don’t even know us.”
I have been so blessed by this wonderful group of women.
We all need each other.
So, how do we support our members?  Glad you asked!
1.  We hold monthly support group meetings – these are on the second Thursday of each month, @ 7:00 pm at the Orem Senior Friendship Center – 93 N 400 E, Orem, UT 84097.  I had one newly diagnosed breast cancer patient say that she didn’t need a group of women who all sat around in a group crying about their situations!  Well, that’s fine, because that’s NOT what we do at Lifting Hearts!  We discuss, share, uplift, and gain knowledge.  Our support meetings are wonderful, and I hope you’ll join us soon!

2.  Several times during the year, we hold larger activities that typically include our families.  In the Spring, we “Celebrate Life” at our Lifting Hearts birthday party.  In the Summer, join us as we gather together at a beautiful park to eat and play.   In the Fall, we hold a 5K to raise funds for our programs, and in the Winter, a Christmas Party wraps up the year in a pretty bow.

3.  There is a side to Lifting Hearts that maybe some of you don’t know about.  We work with members of the community – eagle scouts, women’s’ groups, students, etc. – to make comfort items for breast cancer patients: fleece blankets (to keep warm during chemo and radiation), rice warming bags (to help with the aches and pains of treatments), heart shaped pillows (to help under arms after surgeries), and little care bags (packed with items that help pass the time during your treatments).  We’ve provided some of the local doctors with these items to give to their patients.  In fact, chances are you’re enjoying one of these things right now!

4.  Our one-on-one mentoring program – Bosom Buddies – helps those who might be uncomfortable in a bigger setting – patients have a buddy who has walked down the same road, and who is happy to lead and guide them through the scary places they might encounter during treatments.  The thing I love most about this program, is that it helps survivors give back – a kind of “pay-it-forward”, which helps with healing.

5.  Our free breast cancer RETREATS are incredible!  We’ve taken the very best from every retreat we’ve been to, and combined everything into a 3-day weekend, held at an incredible 5000 square foot cabin in Heber, Utah.  Retreats include classes, art projects, pampering, yoga, wonderful food, good friends, and an amazing and loving atmosphere! We are here to HELP SURVIVORS HEAL!

Can you see, with all of these different components, how Lifting Hearts and it’s members are creating a beautiful symphony of love, compassion, and help?  One of our survivors summed it up nicely – Lifting Hearts is a “soft place to land”.
