"My cancer has felt like a burning house.
While it burns, every bit of energy and attention is spent fighting the fire; you have to kill the cancer. You can’t feel or do anything else.
But then the fire is extinguished and the cancer is gone. And you thought you’d just feel relief and gratitude like everyone else around you, so you can’t figure out why you feel so overwhelmed with grief and anger and fear. But even if the fire is out, your house has been ravaged by flames and water and smoke. So now you are left to clean up and rebuild, and the emotions you couldn’t feel while you were fighting the flames are demanding their turn. The clean up isn’t as terrifying as the fire. But it feels more overwhelming and much more confusing."
